Mankind, as a whole, is incapable of comprehending something truly different, instead trying to find a way to explain it away with either a badly made explanation or incredibly in-depth walk through step by step. We build things, and explain them, using science, religion, or other methods, saying complex chemical reactions cause emotions, or God makes the flowers grow. But we lack true understanding of the way everything works. We have methods, numbers, names, but what are all of those worth, truly? Little to nothing. Humanity cannot deal with extreme change once a sequence has been arranged, a method created cannot be differed from, only changed into another method. In modern society, Two plus two must always equal four. It cannot be otherwise, lest you cause a massive re-working of literally everything humanity has ever achieved, just to make it work again. If three plus three is seven, yet again, you must change everything to make it work again. This lack of flexibility makes changing anything highly difficult. If people suddenly starting calling men women and vice-versa, it would require re-writing many books, changing many other things in the process. With one change comes more changes, and everything will have to be redone, to prevent mistakes. Change, in our society, as it is, is difficult, but as the world becomes ever more complex, rapid, small changes as well as slow, large changes will become nigh impossible.

Society now preys upon weakness in order to strengthen those it wants higher up. It employs fear tactics, straight lies, deceptions big and small, falsifications, and violence to get what it wants. In this world, there exists the "good" people who are often on the bottom of the "food chain", while the ruthless, often seen as "evil" people are on top. Yet, this is no different than it was back when we were considered feral creatures, we serve ourselves to survive, and prey on others to further our standing in the groups we are a part of. It has simply become less violent in the physical department, and moreso in the mental and social. We as creatures are ruthless, because back when society was small tribes with rocks and sticks, we had to be that way to survive. We maintain these instincts because, at our core, we are virtually the same as we were then. Just more complex.

Poke, I think you underestimate the rate of change in humanity. seventy years ago pink was manly and blue was girly, man used to be the general while human was the masculine, and a hundred other differences that you'll never hear about, precisely because they happened so cleanly.

People change their perceptions all the time. It's the people themselves who don't.

Generally you just have to wait for the generation with those viewpoints to die out for a mass shift in things. As long as they're still alive to some degree you'll still see some remnant of their beliefs.

Also- top of the top: Bill gates

Top of the top for charity: also Bill Gates

guy routinely gives away his yearly salary to charity because he has more money than he wants.

Also, celebrities can be crazy generous. For example, Russel Brand has a habit of picking up homeless people and taking them to dinner.

Because he likes talking to them.

Yeah, the reason totally isn't that he knows they might starve otherwise.

The internet is the death of advance. Mankind will start to conform to standards set by a set few, who don';t actually exist but are perceived to be there. Standards such as...

Yes.

Mankind is not sentient. Who ever said that? We don't think for ourselves, we all think as one. No one culture is seperated, nothing such as the Aboriginal dreamtime exists anymore. We don't create new ideas, we achieve knowledge, which is paramount these days. But without new ideas, we stop thinking for ourselves. We conform to the standards of society, and do not change.

Just a little philosophical thinking before DayZ.

Actually the internet has allowed for greater compartmentalization of culure. Facets of culture at odds with one another just avoid each other for the most part, while likeminded folk coalesce into separate groups. Rules against bringing baggage in from other communities help in furthering the formation of internet cliques. I mean, we'''re a group of people who split off from the Sporum for any number of reasons to form an exclusively role play based community or friends of those emigrants who were invited in.

Yes but each of us has different interests- I like pony, write pony, read pony, and watch pony, but I also watch dan vs, enjoy adventure time, watch yogscast, play magic, pirate games(alot), LOVE fallout, play Minecraft almost religiously, occcasionally computer program, etc. Compartmentalization happens, sure, but only if you let it. Think about the 'social' brony phenomena- people who were in no way related to the first surge of popularity, but became interested because people they knew from un-pony related websites were interested. The internet has facilitated the spread, specialization, and continuation of culture- not hampered it.

Honestly, though, I think we're not gonna come to a reasonable conclusion here. This is cultural pessimism going up against cultural optimism- neither of us is going to give in.

Culture is always evolving and changing. Nothing is going to stay the same, whether you're pessimistic about it or not. Culture isn't an illusion either, I forgot who said that pseudo-philosophical jargon, but they're cracked up on drugs.

It actually depends on your definition of change. Vocabulary, ways of doing things, cultural niceties, etc. could change over time, but if you get down to it is it really different? The exact words might vary over time, but there will still be words for the same things. The way we buy and trade may change, but it is still, in essence, the same thing. Different cultural movements might develop, but are they actually new or just a repeat of some prior movement?

When considering change from a philosophical perspective, you need to consider whether something has truly changed into something new or merely developed into a form of the same thing. I'm not saying that such change does not occur. It's just that change may not be as common as things may seem.

But that's not what he's talking about, he isn't being philosophical, he's being... well, an 80 year old man yelling about how the internet or TV or the radio or telegrams or countless other innovations is going to kill 'culture'.

I said no such thing, sir. I speak only my own perception of truth, and you speak yours. Like many people on the internet, we project our opinions on others and refuse to allow them their own opinions because we believe they are wrong. I do not say the internet is ruining culture, but that people are, and their lack of courtesy can be traced to many things, like their childhood, the way they were raised, their parents, and their environment. My own life is an example of having everything someone could want, yet lacking what they really need.

I feel lost in my own head, and I shall say nothing of my physical, emotional, or mental state, besides stating that they could be better. Yet I keep living, hoping someone will hear what I have to say, and truly listen. And maybe what I say isn't correct, politically or otherwise, but I shall be what I am; a foolish child, who has an unrealistic view on the world, who is drowning in his own thoughts.

Who said that? He has merely been suggested that culture might be more primal than one would think. Nothing about culture dying. When someone rambles on then asks for thoughts, it is worth being philosophical about it. That's the point.

No, the above was a joke. Don't take it as an insult. I challenge you to find it's partner.

What I'm saying is just that society really is quite basic and the same, really. I mean, would you expect a MacDonalds (or KFC, like that scene from Argo...) in a country that is really quite different from the west? Wait, no, not only would you find it, you would find it is becoming even more like the west. I'm not saying that's bad, but when a culture absorbs so much of another's, they start to seem similar. Is there change if everything inexorably marches to the same standard? Yes, some culture, accents, museum pieces, holidays, great historic feats, and other things of that sort will remain, and that's nice. Unless the world gets conquered by Madagascar... Do they really have mongoose-cobra fighting there?

The standardisation of global culture is indeed a notable change. It is a gradual one, but a change all the same.
